Mac is great. If you are switching to macOS from Windows it can happen that you will miss some application. There is a lot of alternatives to most of the Windows applications. You can use https://alternativeto.net/ to find them. In some cases, you will not find a good alternative.

This is the case of mainframe 3270 emulators. Many mainframe developers like the emulator that they use for a long time such as QWS3270 or Vista tn3270. The alternatives for Mac does not have all the nice features that these Windows applications have and it can be difficult to get used to a different emulator.

This tutorial will show you how to install and run Windows applications on macOS using Wine. We will see it on an example of the mainframe emulator but you can use the same steps for any application. There is a database called the AppDB. It shows user reviews of how well specific Windows programs work under Wine.

We will use the Terminal application to install your Windows application, Wine, and its prerequisites. In the end, you will be able to start your application using an icon like any other application on macOS.

These steps were tested on macOS Mojave 10.14.5 and Wine 4.0.1.

1. Install Homebrew
